Marine debris, or marine trash is any human-made solid material that is disposed of or abandoned on beaches, in waterways that lead to the ocean, or in the ocean itself (Ocean Health Index).
According to National Geographic, there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean and counting, with 269,000 tons floating on the surface. Meanwhile, four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer are littering the deep sea.
To put this further in perspective, plastic only accounts for 60-80% of marine debris (Ocean Health Index).
